Pharrell didn’t predict Get Lucky success

Pharrell Williams had “no idea” ‘Get Lucky’ would become so popular.

The hip-hop star is overwhelmed by the success of his collaboration with French duo Daft Punk – who marked their comeback with the track – and although he knew it would do well because of how “different” it is, Pharrell didn’t expect it to break so many records.

On the day of its official release, ‘Get Lucky’ became music service Spotify’s most streamed song in a 24-hour period in the US and UK – where the track remained number one on the singles chart for four weeks and sold over 600,000 copies.

Pharrell told MTV News: “I mean, I thought it would do good, I didn’t know it would be this; I didn’t know it would be breaking records across the board, I had no idea.

“I just thought it would do well, because it felt great and it felt different, and you guys know I live for those types of things, to do things that are different.

“So the fact that it’s been so explosive, and that the people chose to make it the phenomenon it is; the only thing we can say is thank y’all. I was with the robots yesterday, and, of course, they’re super thankful too.”

The electronic duo – Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo – recently revealed they have no plans to tour their new album ‘Random Access Memories’ and Pharrell admits the pair are constantly focused on the present rather than future ventures, a trait which remains even without the robot costumes.

He added: “They don’t talk about future plans; they’re all about the present, which has no ribbon. The masks are an extension of who they are as people … they pretty much think that way regardless.”
