Nile Rodgers thought Marvin Gaye “hated” his band for 30 years, after a show they played where the crowd nearly rioted, causing police to stop Marvin from playing.
Nile Rodgers thought Marvin Gaye “hated” his band for 30 years.
The ‘Le Freak’ guitarist’s band, Chic, played one show at the Kool Jazz Festival in California where the audience were so rowdy after their performance the police feared there would be a riot. They then stopped Marvin from playing, leaving Nile to think it had made him dislike his group.
He told Big Issue magazine: “The cops had to come out to get us to quell the crowd three times because they thought there was gonna be a riot, so we drove around in a baseball cart that looked like the Popemobile, waving like we were the Queen or something.
“It was crazy because we wanted to give respect to Marvin Gaye but the people wouldn’t let him play. Man did I have love for Marvin Gaye but we didn’t even speak to him because we felt so uncomfortable.”
Nile’s view held until recently when a journalist played a tape of an interview with Marvin – who was shot dead in 1984 – in which he praised Chic.
He added: “I was convinced that he hated us, until I spoke to a journalist last year who played me Marvin’s last interview before he died, talking about Chic.
“So he went from not knowing who we were and me going a full 30 years thinking he hated us, to that. But that gig – that was a huge, huge moment.”
Nile is touring across Europe with Chic this summer.
